On Brief 538, I mentioned that Skype was coming to the iPhone. Late that day, it was released, and I immediately loaded it on my phone. The app is free. Skype-to-Skype calls are free, and it’ll allow you to make inexpensive calls to real phone numbers.
You do have to be on a WiFi connection to use the app. It won’t work over 3G. The design is very Apple-like. When you want to dial a number, you can choose the Contacts icon to choose a number from your existing contacts on the phone, or you can import Skype information from your Contacts.
Having the app available is awesome! However, there is an annoyance. If you get a text message, or get a low battery warning, the active call will get put on hold without warning. Also, you can’t put the screen to sleep, or you’ll get the same result. I wonder if this can change with 3.0. We’ll see!

I have been playing around with the app some today… I have not made any calls only text chats… I have however been only using it over EDGE and it works fine. I do think the voice calls require WiFi.

I used it this morning for a 2.5 hour conference call. Worked like a champ. I did notice the Screen would sleep if I unplugged it from the USB Charger and walked around the house. Once I plugged it back into the USB, the screen came back on and stayed on which it was charging.

I sure hope 3.0 gives Skype enough flexibility to fix those issues. It’s almost a pointless app if the call connection can’t be maintained during incoming text messages and low battery warnings. :(
Not sure I grasp Skype on the iPhone. Why not just use the phone? So basically put a phone on your phone so you can talk while you talk??? I can see the relevance of it on the iPod Touch or maybe for the IM capabilities, but why Skype someone with your iPhone instead of just calling them?
@Anonymous: Because cell phone minutes are expensive, and Skype Unlimited is what, like $3 a month? So if I’m in range of WiFi, there’s no reason to burn that expensive AT&T call time.
Cali, I with “not sure I grasp” as in I’m not sure I ever use the minutes I have and since I subscribe to AT&T with my iPhone, I’m not sure how I would use the Skype app or why I would want to. Did you get your dream job, by the way?
The concept of Skype phone-on-a-phone fits well for something like exactly what I did last night. My girlfriend lives in Canada. I talk to her over Skype all the time, calling her phone and only paying about 2 cents a minute. Having Skype on my iPhone means I can now be anywhere in the house instead of at my computer.
Well, Skype long distance is a hell of lot free than calling from a cell phone, and if you call long distance to a phone and not another skype account it’s still a hell of a lot cheaper. Cheaper than using a landline.
The Skype looks nice and works well but for me it’s useless having an IM app that cannot be left running the background.
My last two (relatively cheap) phones have both allowed me run Skype as a background task and it annoys me that Apple won’t allow it too. I understand their argument about diminished battery life but can’t that be my choice to make?
I have no ATT when at work and they track personal calls so I Skype from my laptop. I’ve used Fring and Nimbus but connections are iffy and echo - this true Skype client works GREAT. And it has a dialpad avail during the call (unlike the others) AND has a speakerphone button (unlike the others).
The only annoyance so far is when I pick a contact to call it doesn’t put the +1 at the beginning automatically like the MacOS client does. And I can’t add it to the beginning manually either. If I put a 1 before I pick a contact to dial, it overwrites the 1 with the phone number. The only option is to backspace, add the 1 and manually type in the number (from memory). I’m hoping a quick update will fix this little issue.
My solution for not being able to put it to sleep without losing the call is to jailbreak and use the “Backgrounder” app. That way it stays running in the background. You can then easily disable Backgrounder after the call is over.
Skype for iPod Touch seems to make a lot more sense than Skype for the iPhone. It seems unlikely that most people would have Wi-Fi access but not cell coverage. I would guess that this isn’t going to be a large revenue generator for Skype. That said, it is a nicely designed app.
For those of you confused about the reasoning behind why have Skype on your cell. It may not be necessary for everyone. But for example, I travel for a living and if I want to make a call to or from say, Prague or Rome or Sydney, now all I need is a WiFi connection and bingo, practically free phone calls to or from anywhere in the world. Let’s say you’re someplace that is out of cell range but you have a WiFi connection, you can still make that call. And once again, if you Skype call to someone also using Skype anywhere in the world, the call is literally, FREE.
I have to say I’m pretty impressed with the app. The call quality is far better than that of Fring and you can see you account details such as how much skype credit you have etc. I made a call to a friend in Malaysia who was also using an iPhone and it worked great and since it was skype to skype it was free. He could never have taken a laptop on his travels but with an iPhone he was sorted!
The idea itself is great, and I travel a lot so the ability to make calls from my mobile for free to others with Skype running is a bonus….BUT….not being able to run it in the background means it is a very one-way process! You still have to sms the person using iPhone and tell them to start the app if you want to contact them, instead of it running in the background.
Come on Apple…I am a big boy, let me make my own mind up about running things in the background…OR grow up and let us have replaceable batteries.
Skype works fine on my iphone,i think 3.0 will solve some probs with it probably its going have push so it can push a call and a chat to you ,thats what i read between the lines on the keynotes tho.

The chat portion of Skype does work with EDGE and 3G though.

I have had a problem with the skype app crashing after about 1mimute of use. incomparable with jailbroken iPhone? No luck here :(

I used it this morning for a 2.5 hour conference call. Worked like a champ. I did notice the Screen would sleep if I unplugged it from the USB Charger and walked around the house. Once I plugged it back into the USB, the screen came back on and stayed on which it was charging.

I sure hope 3.0 gives Skype enough flexibility to fix those issues. It’s almost a pointless app if the call connection can’t be maintained during incoming text messages and low battery warnings. :(

Not sure I grasp Skype on the iPhone. Why not just use the phone? So basically put a phone on your phone so you can talk while you talk??? I can see the relevance of it on the iPod Touch or maybe for the IM capabilities, but why Skype someone with your iPhone instead of just calling them?

@Anonymous: Because cell phone minutes are expensive, and Skype Unlimited is what, like $3 a month? So if I’m in range of WiFi, there’s no reason to burn that expensive AT&T call time.

Cali, I with “not sure I grasp” as in I’m not sure I ever use the minutes I have and since I subscribe to AT&T with my iPhone, I’m not sure how I would use the Skype app or why I would want to. Did you get your dream job, by the way?

The concept of Skype phone-on-a-phone fits well for something like exactly what I did last night. My girlfriend lives in Canada. I talk to her over Skype all the time, calling her phone and only paying about 2 cents a minute. Having Skype on my iPhone means I can now be anywhere in the house instead of at my computer.

If your phone is jailbroken then be sure to run Cydia and upgrade your “mobile substrate” to the latest version. Otherwise Skype will crash a lot.

Well, Skype long distance is a hell of lot free than calling from a cell phone, and if you call long distance to a phone and not another skype account it’s still a hell of a lot cheaper. Cheaper than using a landline.

The Skype looks nice and works well but for me it’s useless having an IM app that cannot be left running the background.
My last two (relatively cheap) phones have both allowed me run Skype as a background task and it annoys me that Apple won’t allow it too. I understand their argument about diminished battery life but can’t that be my choice to make?

I have no ATT when at work and they track personal calls so I Skype from my laptop. I’ve used Fring and Nimbus but connections are iffy and echo - this true Skype client works GREAT. And it has a dialpad avail during the call (unlike the others) AND has a speakerphone button (unlike the others).
The only annoyance so far is when I pick a contact to call it doesn’t put the +1 at the beginning automatically like the MacOS client does. And I can’t add it to the beginning manually either. If I put a 1 before I pick a contact to dial, it overwrites the 1 with the phone number. The only option is to backspace, add the 1 and manually type in the number (from memory). I’m hoping a quick update will fix this little issue.

My solution for not being able to put it to sleep without losing the call is to jailbreak and use the “Backgrounder” app. That way it stays running in the background. You can then easily disable Backgrounder after the call is over.

Skype for iPod Touch seems to make a lot more sense than Skype for the iPhone. It seems unlikely that most people would have Wi-Fi access but not cell coverage. I would guess that this isn’t going to be a large revenue generator for Skype. That said, it is a nicely designed app.

For those of you confused about the reasoning behind why have Skype on your cell. It may not be necessary for everyone. But for example, I travel for a living and if I want to make a call to or from say, Prague or Rome or Sydney, now all I need is a WiFi connection and bingo, practically free phone calls to or from anywhere in the world. Let’s say you’re someplace that is out of cell range but you have a WiFi connection, you can still make that call. And once again, if you Skype call to someone also using Skype anywhere in the world, the call is literally, FREE.

I have to say I’m pretty impressed with the app. The call quality is far better than that of Fring and you can see you account details such as how much skype credit you have etc. I made a call to a friend in Malaysia who was also using an iPhone and it worked great and since it was skype to skype it was free. He could never have taken a laptop on his travels but with an iPhone he was sorted!

The idea itself is great, and I travel a lot so the ability to make calls from my mobile for free to others with Skype running is a bonus….BUT….not being able to run it in the background means it is a very one-way process! You still have to sms the person using iPhone and tell them to start the app if you want to contact them, instead of it running in the background.
Come on Apple…I am a big boy, let me make my own mind up about running things in the background…OR grow up and let us have replaceable batteries.

Skype works fine on my iphone,i think 3.0 will solve some probs with it probably its going have push so it can push a call and a chat to you ,thats what i read between the lines on the keynotes tho.
